Tomefold › Voice journaling and dictation
Keep a voice journal on iPhone: dictate, then clean up
Updated October 17, 2026
Speaking is the easiest way to journal when you are tired, walking or just not in the mood to type. The catch is that dictated text comes out as one long, unpunctuated block with a few mis-heard words. Here is a simple routine, and what Tomefold's optional Claude cleanup does and does not do.
First, what Tomefold does not do
Tomefold does not record audio and does not transcribe speech itself. Dictation is done by your device's own keyboard dictation. Tomefold then helps you clean up the text that dictation produced.
A simple routine
- Start an entry. Open a new entry in Tomefold.
- Dictate. On iPhone and iPad, tap the microphone on the keyboard; on Mac, start Dictation from the Edit menu or the keyboard shortcut you have set. Say punctuation aloud if you like (“comma”, “period”, “new paragraph”).
- Tap the sparkle button (✦) in the editor, if you have turned on the Claude cleanup.
- Compare. Tomefold shows the corrected text next to yours. Apply it, or undo it.
What the Claude cleanup fixes
- Mis-heard words, rebuilt from the context.
- Grammar, punctuation and paragraphs, so a block of text becomes a readable page.
- A short title, if the entry has none.
It is written to change the form a lot and the content very little: it keeps your voice, your point of view, your opinions and feelings, and details like names and times, and it does not add reflections you never made. You can also write notes for it (who you are, the names at home, how you like to write), which it takes into account.
What you need, and what it costs
- The cleanup is a Pro feature and works with your own Anthropic API key, which stays in your device's Keychain. Requests are billed to your Anthropic account.
- Without a key you can still dictate and edit by hand: everything else in Tomefold works the same.
Privacy, in one paragraph
The text of an entry is sent only when you tap the sparkle button, only after you have agreed in the dialog that appears the first time, and only to Anthropic, straight from your device with your key. It does not pass through Tomefold and the developer does not receive it. You can withdraw consent in the settings. Read what makes a journal app private for the whole picture.
Tips for better dictation
- Speak in short sentences and pause between ideas.
- Say proper names slowly, or fix them after.
- Dictate in the same language as the entry.
- Always read the comparison before you apply the change: it is your journal.
Frequently asked questions
Does Tomefold record or transcribe my voice?
No. It does not record audio or transcribe speech. You dictate with your device's keyboard dictation, and Tomefold helps you clean up the resulting text.
Does the Claude cleanup change what I said?
It is written to fix the form (mis-heard words, grammar, punctuation, paragraphs) and to change the content as little as possible, keeping your voice and details. You see a comparison before applying it, and you can undo it.
Do I need an Anthropic account to use it?
You need an API key from your own Anthropic account. Tomefold has no key of its own and nothing is billed through Tomefold.
Is my entry sent anywhere when I dictate?
Dictation is handled by your device. An entry's text is sent to Anthropic only if you tap the sparkle button, after agreeing, with your own key.
Can I use dictation without Pro or without a key?
Yes. Dictating and editing work for everyone. The sparkle cleanup needs Pro and your own key.
Keep your journal on your terms
Tomefold is free to write in, to import into and to export from. Pro is a single purchase: no subscription.
